“Captain Billy” and his two “Co-Captains”, David and Laura, have a mission…that the writing and publication of this series of books, and the continued and ongoing development of this website, not only entertain, but enlighten and educate kids of all ages in aviation, and present everyday life lessons.

We would like to become a focal point, where anyone interested in all things aviation will turn to TommytheTexan.com as a valued, and reliable source. A source, not only for questions and answers, but for education and direction in all things aviation-related. To be able to set you on the correct heading and course to get you safely and efficiently to your desired destination. Whether it be in just questions about flight and flying, the whys and where’s, or the history of a particular aircraft.

We hope to increase the level of understanding to the depth and degree you crave. I have been around, and directly involved with, aviation and, and aviation and technical education, for most of my life. From an “Airport Kid” to an Airline Check Airman, to an Aviation Educator, to just a Plane “Aviation Nerd.” From General Aviation, to Military Aviation, and all things in between. However, rather than use the “shotgun approach,” we hope to focus and pinpoint you in the specific direction or just get the answer for you. While we do not claim to be all-knowing, we most likely know where to find it. A trusted and valuable aviation resource.

I have long been an advocate for knowing your subject, and for being an Aviator, not just an Operator. Know your subject or the piece of equipment you are responsible for. Not just the what, but the where, why and how’s. A thorough understanding. I am very fond of this following statement, and have recited it to my cohorts many times. I regret I do not know the exact source, I’ve said it for so long the source might even be me, so here goes…

If a light comes on in the cockpit, all you really need to know to just be an Operator is…
“Push the button, get the banana.”

As an Aviator, it’s…
“Push the button, where’d the banana come from?”

There is a big difference between just reading the checklist and knowing the system.

I am a firm believer in an in-depth understanding of whatever you are doing. From an English paper, to a Math problem, to a complex system in an Aircraft. I used to teach such an in-depth course on the aircraft I was involved with, and enjoy imparting the where’s, why’s and how’s. This is what we hope, in some small way, to accomplish here. To develop as a source to locate, educate and steer a parent and/or child in the right direction with abundant, accurate information.

Our Mission is to educate and inspire, while having fun and enjoying the journey and the inter-activity, both in aviation and everyday life. To be involved together. My hope is to instill a sense of teamwork, and that you can share in the blessing of what I have and share with David and Laura.
